He produces a warm, rich tone (something one seldom hears from a steel-string guitar) and presents the tune in a thoughtful, lyrical manner. Light dance tunes like Cullen Bay and Bill Malley's Barndance are rendered with great spirit and humor...." "The bulk of the music is very impressive and his guitar playing remains impeccable throughout." Alex Moffatt writing in Irish Music Magazine, Nov. 1997

Ramble to Cashel -
|
| (O'Carolan) -
This is one of Turlough O'Carolan's
less known melodies and one of his
most haunting. Generally played as
a somewhat bouncy harp piece, I have
slowed it down to accentuate its
melancholy flavor. The place designated
in the title is believed to be the
Cashel that lies in Ireland's County
Ros Common. (Tuning: CGDGCD) |
| (Baughman) -
I wrote this three-part march after
watching a video of English guitarist,
Martin Carthy. The recurring middle
finger thwack (MFT) on the melody
line is a valuable technique taught
to me by another English guitarist,
Martin Simpson. (Tuning: EAAEAB) |
| (Traditional) -
Fiddler Martin Hayes is a wonderful
source of tunes awaiting adoption
by guitarists. This piece is from
his Green Linnet album, Under the
Moon. The Appalachian flavor in this
arrangement is created by combining
the Simpsonian MFT with a banjo frailing
technique that guitarist Jody Stecher
taught me. (Tuning: EABEBC#) |
